The 21st European Film Festival in Jordan, 1-16 November

The European Film Festival has become a traditional autumn event that for two decades has attracted Jordanian cinema lovers and resident foreigners to a wide range of films produced in Europe. The 21st edition will mainly take place in Amman, at the Al Hussein Cultural Centre, along with screenings of selected movies in the cities of Zarqa, Irbid, Aqaba & Karak. As has always been the case, watching the movies is free of charge and open to the public.

The 21st edition of the European Film Festival is mainly funded by the Delegation of the European Commission to Jordan, together with the embassies of the European Union Member States in Amman. It is arranged by the European Union headed by the current presidency of the Swedish Embassy in Amman, in cooperation with the Royal Film Commission. OrangeRed is the event organizer. The event is under the patronage of HRH princess Rym Ali.

The event is sponsored by Greater Amman Municipality, ASEZA, Ayyam FM and Spin Radio....

One of the festival’s aims is to introduce Jordanian people to the culture and the tradition of the European countries, also regarding issues that concern the young generation. It is of great importance to the European Union to enhance the dialogue with the Jordanian society, and one important aspect of this is through communication of culture.

During the festival, films from 15 European countries will be screened.
Many of the films screened have some aspects in common, and therefore two main themes have been chosen. The first one, Cultural dialogue, concerns the dynamics and frictions that appear when people of different background meet. The second, Past versus present, deals with the dynamics of the passing of time, the relationship between young and old, and Europe’s colorful history.

During the film festival, side events related to the two festival themes - Cultural dialogue and Past vs. Present - will be arranged. On November 9 there will be events related to the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. This historical event, of vast importance for the whole of Europe, will be celebrated with a film screening and concerts with bands that explore the possibilities of cultural dialogue. The popular German band 17 Hippies will be playing at this event together with the popular Jordanian Band Sign of Thyme. Cultural dialogue is also expressed in side events, arranged in Amman and Zarqa on November 5 and 7, related to the Danish film.

This is an open invitation from the European Union for Jordanians to get a taste of different aspects of the culture and history of Europe. The annual European Film Festival 2009 will take place between November 1-16.
